How do we know — and how do we remember?
How does the Australian War Memorial use places, objects, images and personal stories to shape how Australians understand and remember the past?
This virtual site study positions students as historians rather than passive visitors. Students will observe, question, analyse, compare, corroborate and interpret evidence before constructing their own evidence-based historical narrative.
Observe
Separate what a source actually shows from what we think it might mean.
Interrogate
Ask who created a source, when, why, for whom and what it can — and cannot — tell us.
Compare
Explore various experiences and viewpoints rather than depending on just one narrative.
Construct
Use evidence to create and justify an interpretation of the past.
